Arokodare entered the game in the second half as a substitute for Victor Osimhen, who had just scored a brace to secure Nigeria’s historic win.
The debutant replaced the Napoli star under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, who opted to give Arokodare the nod ahead of other talents like Victor Boniface, who remained on the bench.
However, it was in the locker room after the match that Arokodare’s emotions overflowed as reported by Pulse Sports Nigeria.
The 24-year-old broke down in tears, overwhelmed by the realisation of his achievement.
Now, the young striker has opened up about the touching moment that triggered his tears, hugging his teammate and idol, Victor Osimhen.
“What a lot of people don’t know is I started crying when I hugged [Victor] Osimhen because I hugged him and said ‘thank you,’” Arokodare revealed per a video by OJB Sports.
“I said in an interview he’s played a huge role in my career and life,” he added.
Arokodare’s gratitude toward Osimhen shows brotherhood and mentorship within the Super Eagles squad, as the debutant credited the established star for inspiring his journey.
For Arokodare, stepping onto the pitch in Nigeria’s green and white jersey was more than just a debut, it was the culmination of years of hard work and the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, made even sweeter by the support of a teammate he deeply admires.
While he did not celebrate his debut with a goal, the Genk forward has been in sensational form this season, netting 19 goals and contributing five assists in all competitions.
His prolific performances earned him a well-deserved spot in the Super Eagles squad, and his debut marked a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.
