'I want to reclaim the number one ranking' - After Wimbledon final defeat, Carlos Alcaraz sets sights high

The Wimbledon final provided another chapter in the rivalry between Jannik Sinner (23, World No. 1) and Carlos Alcaraz (22, World No. 2), two players currently dominating the tennis world.
Just over a week later, the Spanish star discussed his battles with Sinner, his season so far, and his goals for the remainder of 2025.
In the Wimbledon final, world number one Jannik Sinner managed to get his revenge against Carlos Alcaraz, who had triumphed at Roland Garros. The two have claimed the last seven Grand Slam titles between them, showcasing their dominance on the ATP tour.

In an interview with Gazzetta Dello Sport, via GSP, the world number two spoke about his rivalry with Sinner.
"It's a great thing for our sport because it encourages people to watch and play tennis. Our matches, like the recent ones at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, are always highly anticipated. The more we play against each other, the more people will get involved in this sport, especially because every time we face off, we both push ourselves to the limit," Alcaraz stated.
After both Grand Slam finals they contested, the Spaniard and the Italian expressed their appreciation and respect for each other.
"Tennis is a unique sport that allows you to have a huge rival on the court while maintaining a relationship of mutual respect. Sinner and I are good friends; we can talk about many things off the court. I have tremendous respect for him. He's a wonderful person, and I'm sure we'll always manage to maintain this relationship," Alcaraz explained.
Despite the mutual respect and a budding friendship off the court, each player is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. Alcaraz aims to reclaim the top spot in the world rankings and knows that, in the upcoming period, he has fewer points to defend than Sinner.
"Yes, I'm ready. Last year, after the Olympics, I struggled to perform at my best and didn't get excellent results. From now on, I won't have as many points to defend until the end of the season. I'll give my all in the upcoming tournaments to earn as many points as possible. I know Sinner doesn't care if he has a lot of points to defend. He's a fantastic fighter who's always ready to play to win, and he doesn't let that affect him," said the five-time Grand Slam winner.
"But I'm ready for the challenge. Right now, the main goal is to regain the number one ranking. I'm preparing for the American tournaments so that I'm in top form for the US Open," Alcaraz added.
The 22-year-old expressed satisfaction with how the current season has unfolded, particularly with his triumph at Roland Garros. Alcaraz revealed he still doesn't know how he managed to save three match points and secure the trophy.
"The truth is that in sports, but not only in sports, you have to keep believing, believing until the end. Tennis is a long and demanding journey, and you're completely alone with your thoughts. The key, in the Roland Garros final against Jannik, was this: to believe that I could win the match, even in the most difficult moments, without allowing myself to be discouraged," revealed the Olympic silver medalist, with maturity.
Lately, Alcaraz has been trying to view tennis as a game and to remind himself that he's dreamed of this since he was a child. This approach to managing pressure has been developed through diligent work with a psychologist who has guided him on handling the stress of matches.
As a result, the world number two no longer pays as much attention to criticism as he did in the past.
"I try not to think about it too much, because there was a time when I was very influenced by criticism, and it was very difficult. So now I try not to give too much weight to certain things that are said. Over the years, I've realized that every small step matters and that you can learn even from failures. You don't have to be a star every day. The important thing is to be consistent and to fight to become better. Always," concluded Carlos Alcaraz.
Currently, Sinner has 12,030 points, and Alcaraz has 8,600 points in the ATP rankings. However, in the second half of the year, the Italian will have 6,030 points to defend, while the Spaniard will only have 1,030.
