Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson is subjective on the topic that dipping is vital in winning a race. A situation that saw him lose the Olympic 100m gold to Noah Lyles in Paris. Two-time Jamaican champion Kishane Thompson has shaded his fierce rival Noah Lyles' winning style to clinch the 100m gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games last summer. Thompson convincingly stormed to 100m victory in a Personal Best (PB) and world-leading time of 9.75s (sixth fastest time in history) to win his second consecutive national title at the Jamaica Trials. In his post-race interview when asked if he has been practicing his dip - a situation that cost him the Olympic gold in Paris, and made him lose his first Diamond League race of the season behind Akani Simbine in Shanghai, Thompson suggested winning a sprint race should be done dominantly and not by close finishes that require dipping. "Dipping is not really the key point of a race. Honestly, if a person seems good as they are from 0-100m; if you set yourself apart from the competition you don't need to dip. I'm just saying that if you're that good you don't need to dip," said Thompson. The 22-year-old further added: "If you execute your race like you should and you separate yourself from the pack...The majority and the best part of the race is the drive phase, the transition, and your maintenance." Lyles and Thompson led arguably the greatest men's 100m race in Olympic history, with the American taking the edge at the finish line with a perfect dip to clock a new PB of 9.79s, despite both running the same time. Lyles' famous Olympic gold was an addition to his world title from 2023, which earned him the bragging rights of the world's fastest man. Consequently, Paris birth their fierce rivalry with fans and track enthusiasts believing if Thompson had dipped at the line, he would have been the Olympic champion. With the World Championships in Tokyo set for September, Lyles and Thompson will line up for another famous battle, and who knows, maybe the perfect dip may just win it again.
