Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu defends Asisat Oshoala’s recall for the 2025 WAFCON, addressing her absence and club form. Nigeria’s star-studded squad aims for a 10th title in Morocco. Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has been made to explain his formidable 24-player squad for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, set for July 5-26, after six-time African Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala made a surprise return. Addressing concerns about Oshoala’s inclusion despite her recent struggles at club level, Madugu clarified the reasons behind her two-year absence and expressed confidence in her ability to shine as Nigeria aims for a record-extending 10th continental title. Oshoala’s Return Explained Oshoala, 30, last represented Nigeria at the 2024 Olympics and has faced scrutiny for her lack of goals or assists in 10 appearances for NWSL’s Bay FC this season. In a YouTube video, Madugu dispelled concerns, revealing that Oshoala’s absence was due to permit issues, not a lack of desire or need. “It’s not as if we didn’t need her or she didn’t want to play for the country. There were issues regarding her permit, and she couldn’t secure it during those windows,” Madugu explained. Her return bolsters a squad featuring stars like captain Rasheedat Ajibade, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, and veteran forward Francisca Ordega. Confidence in Oshoala’s Impact Despite Oshoala’s goal drought at club level, Madugu, who also believes the Super Falcons can win a 10th title, remains optimistic about her contribution at WAFCON. “We all know what Asisat can bring to the table. We know her qualities, her strengths, and how to get the best out of her,” he stated. The coach’s faith in Oshoala’s experience and talent stresses Nigeria’s ambition to dominate and reclaim her lost glory in Morocco. With a star-studded squad brimming with international experience, the Super Falcons are aiming to reclaim their continental crown, and Oshoala’s return adds firepower to their mission.
