10,268 accidents in workplaces

The Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) has received 10,268 notifications of accidents in the workplace by employers since January 1, 2019.

This, according to ACCF chief executive officer Parvez Akbar as the international community marks World Day for Safety and Health at Work today.

In a statement, Mr Akbar said the importance and significance of the right to a safe and healthy working environment could not be over-emphasised.

In addition, he clarified employment accidents were mostly caused by slips, trips and falls, machinery, handling materials and tools, stepping/striking against objects and fire or hot substances.

“The industries where the majority of workers were injured include manufacturing, retail trade, tourism, construction, and mining,” he stated.

“These injuries could mostly have been prevented and ACCF continues to be a leading voice in creating awareness on health and safety at work, and in particular the building of a positive safety and health culture.

“This includes daily engagement on social media, face-to-face and online presentations with the public, stakeholders and interested parties. ACCF also regularly identifies potential breaches of health and safety obligations and refers them to the relevant authority for action.”

Mr Akbar also encouraged employers, employees and all stakeholders to work together in preventing incidents of illnesses and accidents in the workplace.

He also encouraged workers to take ownership for their own health and safety, and that of those around them.
