Bhubaneswar: As many as 14 people were killed and six others were injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Odisha on Friday.
One Budri Mandinga (60), her granddaughter Kasa Mandinga (16), and Ambika Kashi (35) died after lightning struck them while taking shelter in a hut near their paddy field at Paradiguda village of Laxmipur block in Koraput district.
Likewise, Jani Das (32) of Khalpadi village under Charangul panchayat in the district also died on the spot after lightning struck Jani while fishing near Lenziguda village.
Similarly, a CRPF Jawan named M Probo Singh died in lightning strike during anti-naxal operation on the Jharkhand border, nearing Rourkela of Odisha. Four other jawans – Subir Kumar Mandal, Suresh Bhagat, Chandalal Hansda, and Jilabal – were also critically injured due to the lightning and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Two boys – Tara Hembram (9) and Jakhun Chatar (12) – died when lightning struck them while they were standing infront of the house at Burusahi village under Anjira panchayat of Dharmashala block of Jajpur district.
A 40-year-old woman named Surushi Biswal of Kusumundia village under Mahabirod police station limits in Dhenkanal district also died by lightning while standing in front of her house. Lightning strike also claimed the life of one Surushi Biswal (40) while she standing infront of the house at Kusumundia village of the district.
Another 45-year-old man who is identified as Sanatan Dian of Kabara village under Gandia police station limits of the district died when he was struck by lightning while returning from a field.
A daily worker named Chunarama Kisko of the Kuting village of Mayurbhanj district also died after being hit by a lightning while he was returning to his relative’s house in Balimundali Majhi Sahi from the Uparbeda forest office.
A class seven student, Omprakash Pradhan, also died after he was struck by lightning while playing cricket in the playground at Barida village under Kabisuryanagar police station of Ganjam district.
Similarly, one Rita Goud (30) of Kebiri Brahmapur under Belaguntha police station of the district died when she was struck by lightning while collecting mango from a mango orchard this afternoon.
In Gajapati district too, one Dayanati Mandal died while working near his house at Kanakata village under R.Udayagiri police station limits.
