Enzo Santiago Alves reportedly suffered a devastating stroke while playing soccer at Arncliffe Park, 11km south of Sydney’s CBD, last Sunday, according to a local soccer Facebook group.
Tributes have poured in for the beloved 14-year-old who has been described as a “loving son, a loyal friend and a joy to be around”.
It is understood that he was taken to hospital but “never recovered” from the stroke, according to posts on social media.
“On Sunday, March 9, 2025, our community was devastated by the tragic events that occurred, leading to the heartbreaking loss of our own brother and football superstar, 14-year-old Enzo Santiago Alves,” a GoFundMe for the teen read.
“Enzo was a kind-hearted, generous soul whose bright smile and warm presence touched everyone he met. He was a loving son, a loyal friend, and a joy to be around.
“As his family faces this unimaginable loss, they are also grappling with the financial hardship that comes with such a devastating time.
“We are raising funds to help support Enzo’s family as they navigate through this difficult period.
“Every contribution, no matter how big or small, will provide much needed assistance and show them they are not alone.
“Please join us in honouring Enzo’s memory and helping his family as they begin to heal.”
The teenager is understood to have remained in a critical condition, with his family holding out hope while he was being treated in hospital.
“Tomorrow is a crucial day, Enzo will undergo a series of tests that will give us important results,” one update on Facebook read.
“Keep sending positive energy. He is fighting like a true warrior.
“He can hear us. Today after talking to him, his heart responded by beating stronger.”
After the tragic news of his passing, hundreds of heartfelt tributes have poured in for the teenager and his grief-stricken family.
“His impact on this world will never be forgotten. My heart goes out to Enzo’s family, friends, and teammates,” one wrote.
“So very sorry to hear this news. Absolutely devastating,” another said.
“Prayers and thoughts are with his family, friends, loved ones and the club.”
“Loss of life at the tender young age of 14 is just incomprehensible and so unjust,” one added.
“Prayers to this young mans family, friends and to all those who knew him.”
A GoFundMe set up on behalf of the family has already raised over $18,000 as of Sunday morning.
According to the Stroke Foundation Australia, the most common symptoms of a stroke include facial weakness, arm weakness and difficulty with speech.
However, they are not the only signs. Loss of vision or blurriness in one or both eyes, dizziness, headaches and difficulty swallowing can also indicate a more serious issue.
While strokes can occur at any age, they are more common in older adults, with about 75 per cent of strokes occurring in people aged 65 and over, according to the foundation.
