15 Injured In Stampede At Vedan’s Palakkad Concert, Police Resort To Lathi Charge

A concert headlined by prominent Kerala-based rapper Vedan turned chaotic on Sunday evening, May 18, 2025, after an overwhelming turnout led to a stampede-like situation at Kotta Maithanam in Palakkad. Local authorities confirmed that at least 15 individuals sustained injuries in the incident, prompting a swift medical response. All injured attendees were transported to the district hospital for treatment.
According to reports from Mathrubhumi and Kerala Kaumudi, the entry gates to the venue were closed by 6 PM as organisers grappled with unmanageable crowds. Despite these efforts, the situation deteriorated rapidly, and crowd control measures proved insufficient. As tensions escalated, law enforcement officials resorted to a lathi charge in an attempt to disperse the surging audience and restore order.
Eyewitnesses noted growing discomfort among concertgoers, particularly those near the stage, with several individuals reportedly experiencing symptoms of dizziness and breathlessness. Emergency medical services were on standby, and no critical casualties have been reported thus far.
Further complicating matters, a confrontation reportedly occurred between police personnel and event organisers amid confusion over crowd management. Authorities subsequently sealed off entry points and diverted surrounding traffic to prevent further congestion in the area.
Earlier in the day, Vedan—whose real name is Hirandas Murali—appeared at a public function attended by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The artist received a warm reception, which, according to sources, may have significantly boosted interest in the rapper’s concert later that evening.
Vedan, a native of Thrissur, rose to fame in 2020 with the viral track Voice of the Voiceless. He has since gained a strong following for his socially conscious lyrics and dynamic performances. His musical credits include work on Manjummel Boys, No Way Out, and collaborations with international artists, including a track on KSHMR’s album KARAM. His recent releases include Kondal Vedan Song, Kisses in the Clouds, and Social Criminal.
Authorities are now reviewing the sequence of events that led to the mishap and are expected to initiate an inquiry into the safety protocols followed at the concert.
