19-loss Rutgers women’s basketball accepts postseason invite — then gets dunked on
@Source: nj.com
Rutgers' season isn’t over just yet.
The 19-loss Scarlet Knights are headed to the WNIT — and even earned a first round bye.
They’ll face the winner of Army (24-7, 14-4 Patriot)/Bryant (17-14, 9-7 AE). The second round will take place from March 23-25. The host site for Rutgers' game has yet to be determined.
Their invitation was met with criticism on social media, with many questioning how the under .500 team made the postseason.
“No disrespect to Rutgers but given the depth of women’s hoops these days how does a team that lost nineteen games not only get in a postseason tournament but gets a bye? cmon,” Joe Favorito posted to X.
Rutgers enters the WNIT with an overall record of 11-19, falling to Nebraska in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. They went 3-15 in Big Ten regular season play.
This marks the Scarlet Knights third appearance in the WNIT. They won the WNIT championship in 2014 and advanced to the second round in 2016.
In 2018, Rutgers declined a bid to the WNIT after being snubbed for an at-large bid in the NCAA tournament.
Here’s what others are saying about Rutgers' WNIT berth:
“I thought it was a joke when someone told me the Rutgers women — 11-19 overall, 3-15 in the Big Ten — might play in the WNIT. Someone, please, make it make sense.“ -- NJ Advance Media sports columnist Steve Politi.
“We have reached Armageddon status with Rutgers women, at 3-15 and by some, one of the worst 5 power conference teams, has been invited to the WNIT.” -- Richard Kent
“Here’s the bracket for the #WNIT - with a win, PFW could play Butler in the Round of 8, then a fourth matchup against Cleveland State is possible in the Fab 4. Also, Rutgers (11-19, 3-15 B1G) got a bye, which is interesting." -- Josh Patterson
“WNIT is much like CBI at this point. Only participants from major conferences this year are Rutgers (11-19) and Butler (15-17).” -- OwlsDaily.com
