1st African School Games: Team Uganda off to Algeria with optimism

Event: 1st African School Games Dates: 26th July to 5th August 2025 Host country: Algeria Host cities: Annaba, Constantine, Setif, Skikda Team Uganda is set to play gallantly at the first ever edition of the ANOCA school games due in the Algerian cities of Annaba, Constantine, Setif and Skikda. An 89-man delegation was officially flagged off at the Copper Chimney Restaurant in Lugogo by the general secretary for the National Council of Sports (NCS) Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel on the evening of Monday, 21st July 2025. Dr Ogwel tipped the students and encouraged them to fight for the national flag with diligence. “The future of Ugandan sport is well guaranteed. The Government of Uganda is now in right trajectory in promoting sports. Give your best effort to represent the country gallantly” Dr Ogwel who was flanked by the commissioner Rev. Canon Dr Duncans Mugumya urged. Representing Zone V under the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), Uganda will participate in the boys’ football category, lawn tennis, table tennis, basketball 3X3, badminton, beach volleyball, swimming and athletics. Team composition Four schools will represent the pearl of Africa, namely Buddo SS, Ngora High School, Seroma Christian High School, and Gayaza High School,in addition to the national select teams for swimming and athletics. Uganda will front a delegation of 89, which includes 53 athletes, 23 coaches, and 13 officials. The official opening ceremony will be held in Annaba on 26th July 2025. The chief de mission for the team Uganda is Lydia Gloria Dhamuzungu. “These games are for competition and we expect you to compete as we eye the world youth Olympics next year” Dhamuzungu stated. She also urged the students and officials to be disciplined to the dot, at all times. For starters, these games are organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). At least 3000 athletes from 44 African countries and more between the ages of 14 to 17 will take part competing in 25 Olympic sport disciplines.
