A 73-year-old man was arrested for sexually harassing a minor girl whose family rented a house from him. When the girl shared her ordeal with her family, they refused to believe her. Undeterred, the girl secretly recorded the man’s actions and submitted the evidence to She Teams, who then filed a criminal case and arrested him.
The 73-year-old was among the 240 individuals who had to attend a mass counselling session at the LB Nagar CP Camp Office for offences of similar nature, in the presence of their families by the Women’s Safety Wing.
He was among 160 adults and 80 minors arrested by the Rachakonda police over the past month for offences ranging from stalking and catcalling - to online abuse.
On Monday, the counselling session was held not only to warn but also sensitise the offenders about the consequences of their actions.
According to DCP (Women’s Safety Wing) T. Usha Rani, a total of 288 complaints were received in May, 42 involved phone harassment, 102 came via social media apps, and 144 were in-person incidents. A total of 18 criminal cases were registered, while 122 complaints led to official petitions, and 110 individuals were given counselling.
In another case, a man who underwent training at the same cricket coaching centre as a young woman, began threatening her with morphed photos after she rejected his advances. He warned her to accompany him to a hotel or face public humiliation. He was arrested following her complaint.
A third case involved a minor girl who met a man through an online gaming platform. After months of chatting, she cut off contact due to his behaviour. The man began to blackmail her with alleged photos and videos and was arrested by the She Teams.
Two attempted child marriages in Ibrahimpatnam and Narayanapur were foiled by the She Teams and the District Child Protection Unit. The families were counselled, and the minors were rescued.
The She Teams also cracked down on miscreants causing nuisance at bus stands and inside metro trains. Ten men found in the women’s compartment were fined after being caught during decoy operations.
Commissioner of Police G. Sudheer Babu warned that those found harassing women and girls will face strict legal action, and urged the public, especially women, to file complaints without fear. He said She Teams have been conducting decoy operations in mufti across bus stands, railway and metro stations, schools, colleges, vegetable markets and other public spaces to arrest offenders.
Throughout May, 94 awareness programmes were conducted across Rachakonda, reaching over 12,700 people with information on women’s rights, laws, and safety precautions.
Women facing harassment have been urged to contact Rachakonda She Teams via WhatsApp at 8712662111 or reach out to local team numbers depending on their area.
