@Source: oregonlive.com
Police arrested a second person in connection with a fatal March stabbing that took place inside a Northeast Portland hotel. Anthony Staggs, 54, turned himself in on Wednesday a week after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He is accused of third-degree assault in the killing of 26-year-old Drew Courtright. It’s not clear how authorities tied Staggs to the stabbing but an indictment accuses him of aiding 42-year-old Mitch Schoonover, who is charged with first-degree murder. Officers responded around 8 a.m. March 21 to the Sojourn Suites hotel, southwest of Portland International Airport. When they arrived with paramedics, they found Courtright dead at the scene. Drew Courtright’s mother, Shannon, said her son got into a fistfight in a hotel hallway and was stabbed multiple times. Schoonover was arrested the following week. In 2006, he was previously sentenced to 15 years in prison tied to a Gresham fatal shooting. Schoonover has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and third-degree assault. Upwards of 70 people attended a vigil March 27 inside the ballroom of the Sojourn Suites to remember Courtright. Flowers, balloons and several pictures of Courtright sat at a table toward the front along with the phrase, “Keep Live’n Player.” Staggs remains in Multnomah County custody as of Thursday afternoon. — Zaeem Shaikh covers the Portland Police Bureau and criminal justice issues for The Oregonian/OregonLive.
