Even when he was slumping, Happ saw a lot of pitches out of the leadoff spot and he is a master at drawing walks/driving up the opposing pitcher's pitch count. Now that the power is coming around, the Cubs' lineup looks much more dangerous.
Michael Busch and Dansby Swanson also hit bombs in the game.
2. Cubs take advantage of the Phillies bullpen
Heading into the game, the Phillies bullpen was in the bottom third of the league in ERA and the Cubs took advantage of that weakness. With Joe Ross pitching in the eighth inning and a precarious 5-4 lead, the Cubs broke the game open.
After a single from Nico Hoerner, he came home to score on a double from catcher Reese McGuire that almost left the yard for the team's fifth homer. McGuire scored on an RBI single from Kyle Tucker, followed by another RBI knock from Seiya Suzuki to tag ross for three earned runs in the inning. The 8-4 lead held until the end of the game.
3. Colin Rea continues to struggle
Colin Rea is emerging as the weakest link in the Cubs' starting rotation. He admittedly had a tall task with a dangerous Phillies lineup featuring sluggers like Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Nick Castellanos, but he didn't even make it five full innings.
Rea's final line was 4 1/3 innings pitched, with seven hits, four earned runs, and five strikeouts. The performance also forced Manager Craig Counsell to use five relievers in the game, who luckily all turned in scoreless outings.
Rea needs to be better moving forward. I'm not calling for his head, but he at least needs to turn in five innings to preserve the bullpen a bit. When Shota Imanaga returns, the Cubs will likely be forced to option Cade Horton back to Triple-A because he is the only one other than Ben Brown with minor league options left. This means Rea needs to step it up because he is probably staying int he rotation.
The Cubs only have one off day until the end of June so it'd be beneficial if Rea can give the team some length to help preserve the bullpen during this stretch.
