4 Chechen Officers Killed in Mystery Blast in Occupied Kherson – HUR

Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) reports that four officers from Chechnya’s so-called “Akhmat” unit part of Russia’s forces were killed in a blast near Skadovsk in the occupied Kherson region.
Akhmat, categorized as a special rapid reaction unit, is part of the Russian National Guard but is effectively under the control of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. Formed in 2009, the unit was originally tasked with fighting supporters of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.
“On May 20, 2025, a UAZ Patriot vehicle exploded between Skadovsk and Antonivka in the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson region,” the HUR said in a statement on Telegram.
According to a map published by the DeepState analysis outlet, the location of the explosion is approximately 60 kilometers (37.5 miles) from Ukrainian-held territory.
“Not one survived,” the HUR statement reads.
A second explosion followed the initial blast, which the HUR says was caused by the detonation of ammunition the Russian troops had been transporting.
“The HUR reminds that fair retribution awaits every war crime committed against the Ukrainian people,” the statement added, without specifying who was responsible for the blast.
Past investigations by Russia’s Novaya Gazeta have linked Akhmat fighters to abductions, torture, and extrajudicial executions. At least one secret prison is reportedly located on the unit’s grounds.
During the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Akhmat unit earned the mocking nickname “TikTok Army,” as its fighters were frequently seen posting staged videos from the rear rather than engaging in frontline combat, the Insider reported.
In mid-April, Yevgeny Rytikov, chief engineer at the Bryansk Electromechanical Plant and key figure in Russia’s electronic warfare development, was killed when his car exploded in Bryansk.
Rytikov had worked on modernizing the Krasukha EW system, which is used against Ukrainian and NATO aircraft and drones. Ukrainian intelligence declined to confirm involvement, but Kyiv Post sources called the assassination “just punishment.”
Another car bomb killed Russian General Yaroslav Moskalik, who served as Deputy Chief of the Russian General Staff’s Main Operational Directorate on April 25. A device hidden in a Volkswagen Golf parked in Balashikha, near Moscow was detonated as Moskalik walked past, killing him instantly.
Ukrainian MP Roman Kostenko, Secretary of the National Security Committee, said the attack that was carried out by Ukrainian intelligence operatives during a late April interview. Kostenko praised the operation and said such missions will remain a core focus of Ukrainian operations even if a ceasefire is reached.
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Moskalik’s death, saying Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service had eliminated members of Russia’s senior military leadership. He also praised the SBU for ongoing efforts against Russian saboteurs and spy networks in Ukraine.
