At least 58 persons have been killed, 31 injured, and over 15,000 displaced in a new wave of coordinated attacks allegedly carried out by armed militias across several communities in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State in recent weeks. This was revealed by Zang Davou, the chairman Plateau State Youth Council (PYC), Riyom Branch, during a press conference held on Tuesday in Jos. The group described the violence as a continuation of a systematic campaign that has persisted since 2002, involving mass killings, farmland destruction, and the forceful occupation of ancestral lands. The group noted that the latest attacks show a disturbing increase in coordination and brutality, with entire villages destroyed and livelihoods wiped out. “Lamentably, the pattern of these attacks has recently escalated to an unprecedented level of coordination and sophistication. What we have witnessed as a people in the past weeks is a horrifying evidence to this escalating barbarity. “Within this short period, *58 innocent people were brutally murdered in cold blood. These were fathers, mothers, children, and youths, whose lives were cut short without mercy. As I address you, these marauders are in possession of the cellphones of some of their victims and pick up calls that are placed on their SIMs.”. According to the council, the recent assaults led to the destruction of 82 homes and large hectares of farmland, the primary source of income for many of the affected communities. They said many victims now live in dire conditions without access to food, shelter, or medical care, adding that some of the attackers are using the SIM cards of their victims, further traumatizing the affected families. While commending the efforts of security forces, the PYC insisted the government’s response has been inadequate. They stressed that the constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property is not being fully met in Riyom, leaving the communities exposed to repeated attacks. PYC warned that the patience of the youth, though rooted in a desire for peace, was nearing its limit. The group issued seven urgent demands including the permanent deployment of security forces, protection of farmlands, and the return and rehabilitation of displaced persons. They also called for justice through the arrest and prosecution of known perpetrators, and the immediate return of all grabbed ancestral lands. The youth council further appealed for national and international humanitarian intervention, asking for relief materials, medical support, and inclusive peace dialogues based on justice and fairness. They urged global human rights organizations and media to spotlight the crisis and pressure the Nigerian government into action. They stated that Riyom’s youth are determined to continue demanding justice and peace. “We are tired of burying our loved ones. We are tired of living in fear. We demand to live in dignity, on our land, free from violence”; they declared.
