Yuvraj Singh, Yuvraj Singh is probably the biggest Indian legend who was never appointed captain. He played 304 ODIs, 40 Tests and 58 T20Is but never led Team India. Yuvraj did become the vice-captain but never got a chance to captain Team India even on a stand-in basis. He retired in 2019. R Ashwin, R Ashwin is probably India's biggest Test cricket legend who never became captain. He as never even appointed the vice-captain. Ashwin finished his Test career with 537 wickets in 106 Tests. He was a regular in all three formats at one stage in his career. He retired in December 2024. Ravindra Jadeja, Ravindra Jadeja is another legend who was never appointed captain. The veteran all-rounder recently reacted to captaincy ambitions and said that his time to lead the team is now gone. He did become the vice-captain in white-ball cricket on a stand-in basis. He contines to play Test and ODI cricket. , Cheteshwar Pujara, Cheteshwar Pujara is one of India's best batsmen in Test cricket. He filled Rahul Dravid's shoes and became India's permanent number 3 batsman for a decade. But Pujara was never appointed captain. The India legend did become the vice-captain on a stand-in basis. Pujara, who is doing commentary in England, hasn't retired from the game. Harbhajan Singh, Harbhajan Singh was India's best spinner at one stage in his career and he even played ahead of Anil Kumble on few occasions. Harbhajan played 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is but was never appointed captain. The India legend did captain Mumbai Indians in IPL. Under him, MI won the 2011 Champions League. VVS Laxman, VVS Laxman is one of India's biggest Test cricket legends who were never appointed captain. The right-handed batsman played 134 Tests and 86 ODIs. Laxman retired from international cricket in 2012. He took up coaching and commentary after his retirement from international cricket.
