9 Students Hospitalized Due to Suspected Food Poisoning of Free Nutritious Meal in Kupang

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -- Head of the National Nutrition Body (BGN) Dadan Hindayana said that nine students were hospitalized out of around 100 people suspected of being poisoned by free nutritious meal (MBG) at SMP Negeri 8 Kota Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, on Tuesday morning, July 22, 2025. "Nine people are hospitalized," Dadan told Tempo on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.According to Dadan, they complained of symptoms of poisoning on Tuesday morning, July 22, 2025, a day after consuming MBG. SMPN 8 Kota Kupang received 1,050 servings from the Food Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG). This school is one of the eight beneficiary groups of MBG distributed by SPPG Kelapa Lima 1.Eight beneficiary groups of MBG from SPPG Kelapa Lima 1, including SDI Oesapa Kecil, SDN Oesapa Kecil, SMPN 5, SMPN Terbuka, SMPN 8, SMPN 21, Sekolah Luar Biasa Asuhan Kasih, and the posyandu cadre, are currently being investigated for the cause. Brigina recounted that many students from seventh to ninth grade complained of nausea, vomiting, and frequent visits to the bathroom. They were initially treated at the School Health Unit (UKS).However, due to the large number affected, the school had to refer the students to the hospital. "Initially they were treated at the UKS, but because the number was too high, we took them to RSUD SK Lerik for the first batch, and the rest were taken to other hospitals such as RS Siloam," said Brigina.Brigina revealed that several students complained of symptoms such as nausea, stomachache, and diarrhea starting after consuming MBG for breakfast on Monday.
