Nine people were sent to a hospital, including one with serious injuries, after a third-floor deck collapsed at a Dorchester apartment Friday night. Boston police responded to 39 Harwood St. in Dorchester around 9:50 p.m. Friday, where a woman directed first responders to the back of the triple-decker, police said in a statement. One person was hospitalized with serious injuries, and another eight were brought to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Boston police said. As of Sunday, the department had no update on their conditions. Due to the seriously injured person, the Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case, police said in their release. The fire department shared a video of the back of the Harwood home, showing the collapsed porch. A search of Boston Inspectional Service Department’s online record system did not return any records related to decks for the address. Boston ISD did not immediately return a request to confirm the building’s permitting status Sunday. Along with the nine people who fell, a refrigerator on the porch fell and hit one of the people who was injured, according to WCVB. The news station obtained surveillance footage of the incident showing debris falling into the backyard. A third-floor porch in Roxbury collapsed last summer, injuring three people. The building’s exterior structures hadn’t been inspected since 1998, a certification that expired in 2003. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu told WCVB that she hopes private property owners are checking their porches. “We are still hoping and praying that the person who was critically injured will make a recovery quickly, and thankful that for everyone else, the injuries weren’t worse,” Wu said.
