Founded by Durga Venkatesan and Sukrit Mahajan in 2024, Playhouse Productions from Mumbai, will present Garam Roti in the city for a second time.
According to Durga, Sukrit is producing Garam Roti. “We are supporting each other in different departments with our productions,” says Durga, adding, that Garam Roti is a solo piece written, directed and performed by herself.
Garam Roti presents an intimate experience with a documentary style of theatre-making. “I consider it to be an autobiographical work as it comes from a place of my memories, culture, traditions and perspectives, living as a 27-year-old woman in India today.”
Durga continues, “I come from Delhi, but my roots are in Tamil Nadu. The story weaves my entire journey, and is a dialogue or a conversation on domestic work, womanhood and the kind of fears we face today. I lived in Bengaluru for three years and the entire making of the piece took place there; it opened at the Shoonya Centre for Art.”
The immersive piece encourages audience participation, which will result in shaping the performance, says Durga, adding, “We are working with recordings of women from across India which have been produced into CDs. During the performance, audience members can play up to four recordings from the library and listen to women share their narratives on domestic work, and how they are navigating their respective identities.”
The direction the play takes is based on the recordings chosen, she says.
Garam Roti will be staged at Bangalore International Centre (BIC) on May 25 at 6.30pm. Open to those aged 14 and above. Entry free, but RSVP required on BIC site to register.
