A new Stockport neighbourhood with a 'green gateway'

New homes could be built as part of plans to create an ‘attractive’ neighbourhood in Stockport , with a ‘green gateway’ to the proposed development. An application to make the scheme a reality has been submitted to Stockport council by developer Story Homes and Stockport Grammar School. The site is one of the school’s playing fields which has been unused for the last seven years, based on land off Dialstone Lane in Offerton. Once used by pupils for football, rugby, and cricket, the distance of the field from the school - based a 12-minute walk from the main school site over the A6 Buxton Road - has led to safeguarding concerns for students. Ground conditions and the quality of grass have also been found to be ‘poor’, with wet conditions covering most of the area, which is enclosed by fencing and is not accessible to the public. The school hopes to sell the site for development, and plans to use the income to boost the number of bursaries it offers and fund upgrades to its existing facilities. Plans have been drawn up to build 112 homes on the land, in a mixed development with one and two-bedroom apartments alongside two, three, four and five-bedroom houses. Half of the proposed homes would be designated as affordable housing. A ‘green gateway’ entrance would be created from Dialstone Lane, with tree-lined streets along with hedges and shrub planting across the development. Bosses are aiming to create a place which is ‘not dominated by the car’, designed to encourage use of public transport. A planning report reads: "Minimising walking distances and enhancing routes to public transport stops and local services will assist in reducing reliance on the car and providing safe and convenient pedestrian, cycle and vehicular access and movement to, from and within the development." It adds that each home will come with ‘two car parking spaces per dwelling’ as well as electric vehicle charging points and ‘one lockable cycle store’ in homes without a garage. The planning application is due to be decided by June 9, 2025.
