'A number of years' - Manchester United legend gives verdict on new transfer strategy
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
Former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has praised Manchester United for swooping for proven Premier League talent after completing the signing of Matheus Cunha. Cunha became United's first signing of the summer earlier this month after the club triggered the £62.5million release clause in his Wolves contract. He has joined United on a five-year deal, with the option of a sixth. A specialist No.10, Cunha, 26, was identified as a top target for United several months ago. He enjoyed an excellent 2024/25 campaign with Wolves, scoring 17 goals in all competitions, including 15 in the Premier League . Having played in England since January 2023, Schmeichel believes signing a player of his profile is a step in the right direction for United, who have often turned to the overseas market for new faces in recent years. Schmeichel told MUTV: "It's a positive one. I think what we haven't done, for a number of years, is to sign really, really good and well performing players from the Premier League. "And, for that to be the first signing, that is an important signal to send to everyone." Cunha has become the first attacker to join United on a permanent deal from a Premier League counterpart since Alexis Sanchez swapped Arsenal for Old Trafford in January 2018. The Reds, of course, want to add to the signing of Cunha by signing Brentford ace Bryan Mbeumo, who has already been the subject of a £55m offer . He scored 20 Premier League goals last season. "We've signed too many hopefuls, who have done well in other leagues," added the former goalkeeper. "I don't want to disrespect any other leagues but the Premier League is just played at a different pace. "It's relentless for 90 minutes every time. You don't have a moment to relax. Playing in the Premier League is just more difficult than any other league. "We've seen players who haven't performed particularly well, with us as well, go abroad and you can see, all of a sudden, they can play football because it's different."
