A simulator bar with a ‘speakeasy vibe’ welcomes golfers in Kalamazoo County

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — Cigars, whiskey and golf. If you’re a fan of those three things, there’s a place for you in Texas Corners — a golf simulator bar with “a bit of a speakeasy vibe to it.” “I feel like this is a very unique place,” said Joe Kiss, general manager of V’s Bogeys and Stogies, 7717 West Q Ave. in Texas Township. “Most simulator bars seem to be very industrial, with bare walls and little bays. “This place has character; a mural on the wall, big bays, stained bar tops, wood finish all over the place. It’s just got a warm, welcoming feel to it.” The mural, of the 12th hole at Augusta, runs along the entire back wall and features Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. It was done by local artist Nichole Lindhorn. For golf nuts like Kiss, the place just pops out, he said. Kiss has been with V’s since 2023 when the previously members-only indoor club doubled in size and opened to the public. A three-time all-conference golfer for Olivet College in the early 2000s, Kiss has spent his entire career around the game. Most recently he served as the assistant pro at Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Augusta, Michigan. After five years there, he was tapped by V’s Owner Mike VandeMaele — who also owns the three Louie’s locations and local trades company Pro Services — to come help run V’s Bogeys and Stogies. “When I first got here, I had the googly eyes going on a little bit,” Kiss said, referring to V’s top-of-the-line Trackman simulators. “When you watch the pros and see the tracking graphics on TV, this is the exact same equipment the guys on tour are using. “On a good day, it’s extremely accurate. On a bad day, it’s very accurate.” The simulators measure roughly 40 metrics, allowing golfers to work on everything from impact location to swing speed, body angles and more. “It takes a little bit of getting used to,” Kiss said. “But we have guys like me that can give lessons on what all the different stuff means and how to fix what’s wrong with your swing.” Wintertime is V’s busy season, but as golfers begin to head outdoors, they will take advantage of the space on bad-weather days or to brush up on mechanics. “I probably use the sims once a week in the summer to check on my swing,” Kiss said. V’s also offers a 13-week summer league that runs from June 1 through August. Participants can come in any time during the week to get their 18-hole round in. Entry is $150 and the league is open to members as well as the public, Kiss said. Regular public rates to use the space range from $50 to $70 per hour with evenings and weekends costing more. Up to six golfers can use a bay at any given time. Memberships are offered at monthly and annual rates. Monthly rates start at $200 per month for five hours per month, go up to $300 for 10 hours and are $500 for unlimited sims time with unlimited guest use. Annual rates cost $3,900 for the first year and $2,700 for subsequent years. Membership has its privileges. Each member receives a key card and can access the simulators 24/7, allowing them to work on their game in off hours. The only requirement is they book ahead of time online, Kiss said. The bar, which specializes in high-end whiskeys, is only open while the facility is staffed. And while V’s also sells cigars, all smoking must be done outside on the patio. Whiskey Wednesdays offer bar-goers a chance to drink low- and high-tier whiskey flights, which run $45 to $65 for four pours of fine bourbon. V’s also hosts various bourbon-themed events throughout the summer that give patrons a chance to enjoy a fine cigar and bourbon on the patio, treating the space like a true 19th hole. The bar hosts watch parties for major tournaments like the Masters and also has a free putting green and lounge area. As V’s has the same ownership as the nearby Louie’s Texas Corners restaurant, patrons can also order from Louie’s food menu and have it brought over for them. “Once you come in and see how cool the space is, that’s really all you need and you’ll want to come back,” Kiss said. “We’ll take care of you, get you whatever drink you want and the sims are just top of line. They feature 300 different courses to choose from, and you can sync up and play with a friend across the country or the world at any given time.” V’s, which is entered in the rear of the building, opens daily at noon. The venue stays open until 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and 8 p.m. on Sundays. Early bookings before noon are accepted during peak season. Hours may change after Memorial Day. For more information, call 269-743-7534, visit vsbogeysandstogies.com or follow V’s on social media. Patrons are asked to bring their own clubs.
