Aden Adde plane crash: Terrifying moment UN aircraft skids on airport runway as landing gear fails
@Source: mirror.co.uk
This is the horrifying moment a UN plane crash-lands at an airport in Somalia and bursts into flames - after a catasrophic failure of its landing gear caused its nose to skid violently along the tarmac. The De Havilland Dash 8, carrying 22 passengers, was forced into a desperate emergency landing when the front landing gear malfunctioned, sending the aircraft barreling toward the runway in yet another terrifying display of aviation failure. As the plane descended, its nose scraped across the ground with sparks flying at the site of impact at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. Authorities confirmed a "small fire" erupted during the landing but was quickly extinguished, preventing further catastrophe. Miraculously, all 22 passengers on board the plane survived - but harrowing images of its fiery descent showed a large plume of grey smoke rising from the front half of the aircraft. According to Favori LLC, a Turkish company that manages the airport, the crash was caused by the plane encountering a technical fault with its front landing gear. The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) also confirmed yesterday's incident, saying the pilot encountered the problem after departing the airport at 11.16 am. Bound for the city of Baidoa, the pilot had to initiate a return to Mogadishu. A SCAA spokesperson: “The aircraft safely executed a belly landing at Aden Adde International Airport at 1.28 pm local time. Thankfully, there were no fatalities or serious injuries. All individuals were safely evacuated and provided with medical checks and support on site.” The SCAA said airport staff responded to the emergency landing within minutes to safely evacuate everyone on board. As a result, the runway was temporarily closed so airport workers could carry out the emergency response. They said “damage to the aircraft was minimal”. The SCAA added: “A full investigation is underway in coordination with aviation authorities and the United Nations.” Last month, a DHC-5D Buffalo aircraft crashed near Mogadishu after departing Dhobley en route to Aden Adde International Airport at 14:43 shortly after it lost contact with air traffic control. Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) confirmed the incident occurred approximately 24 kilometres from the capital. Five Kenyan nationals tragically lost their lives in the crash.
