'Adolescence': Jamie's Hidden Tabletop Message Spotted by Eagle-Eyed Redditors
@Source: newsweek.com
Eagle-eyed social media users have spotted a hidden message in Netflix's smash hit Adolescence.The four-part British miniseries, which was released on March 13, follows the family of 13-year-old Jamie Miller—played by actor Owen Cooper—who is accused of murdering a female classmate.The show was co-created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham. Graham is an English actor and producer whose previous credits include Snatch and Gangs of New York. Thorne, meanwhile, is a BAFTA-award winning English screenwriter, known for writing the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. He also has writing credits on British programs like Shameless and Skins.On Reddit, fans pointed out a hidden message written on a tabletop in episode three."LFC>MUFC," the note read, referring to Premier League soccer team Liverpool F.C. being better than fellow Premier League team Manchester United F.C.Newsweek reached out to Adolescence co-creators Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham's representatives via email for comment.According Reddit user @Liceista01, the meaning of the message has nothing to do with the show but rather Cooper's personal real-life views."Its [sic] a great show that each episode was shot in one go, the acting is amazing," @Liceista01 wrote. "Anyways on episode 3 Owen Cooper who has said in interviews that he is 'masive' [sic] Liverpool fan wrote LFC > MUFC on the table, (its funny because if you watch the show you'll understand, it has nothing to do with it and he (the actor) did it to take the p*** lol)."Per Merriam Webster, "take the p*** out of" is a British idiom meaning, "to make fun of or laugh at (someone or something)."Longtime neighbor of Cooper, Christine Walker, told the Daily Mail that she's known him "since he was a baby.""I'd see him play [soccer] with his friends in the park right outside my house. He's a massive Liverpool fan and used to go to Anfield quite a bit with his dad Andy and his brothers," she said.At the time of publication, @Liceista01's note had 655 upvotes and 45 comments."Damn, good find. I just finished it yesterday," @greenmantis43 responded in a message with 205 upvotes."I just finished watching last night, I missed that!" @AgreeableLaugh1171 said in a separate note with 63 upvotes. "Great show and this kid is super talented.""That kids [sic] going places. Some performance in that show," @its_brew chimed in, while justank_ said: "Great show and nice find.""Oh wow, I didn't catch this. But love it," @Pineapple_Trvphaus added. "Adolescence was brilliant though. Probably the best series I've watched so far this year."Also in episode three was another hidden meaning—this time involving a sandwich. During a meeting with court-appointed psychologist Briony, played by Erin Doherty, Jamie is offered a hot chocolate with marshmallows and half a cheese and pickle sandwich, despite him not liking pickle.Psychologist Dannielle Haig told entertainment news publication Tyla that while the gesture may have seemed innocent, "everything in a psychological assessment is deliberate," and this was "no exception.""The half-sandwich, particularly the fact that it contains something Jamie dislikes, could be a way of testing his response," Haig said. "Does he push it away? Does he eat it to be polite? Does he comment on it? These reactions provide insight into his personality.""If he simply tolerates it without complaint, it may suggest a history of feeling powerless and being accustomed to having things done to him rather than for him," Haig continued. "If he refuses it outright, it might indicate defiance or a need to exert control in a situation where he has very little power."It's a clever way of gauging how Jamie sees himself in relation to authority figures and whether he feels able to assert his own needs."Adolescence has already made U.K. ratings history by becoming the first streaming service series to top audience measurement organization Barb's weekly list of the top 50 shows on television, Deadline reported. According to the outlet, nearly 6.5 million viewers watched the first episode in its first week, and six million watched the second episode.On Monday, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Thorne and producer Jo Johnson to discuss the influence social media and other online material has on children."As a father, watching this show with my teenage son and daughter, I can tell you—it hit home hard," the 62-year-old said. "It's an important initiative to encourage as many pupils as possible to watch the show. As I see from my own children, openly talking about changes in how they communicate, the content they're seeing and exploring the conversations they're having with their peers is vital if we are to properly support them in navigating contemporary challenges, and deal with malign influences."
