Asisat Oshoala scores her first goal for Nigeria’s Super Falcons in over a year, leading them to a 3-1 victory over Ghana’s Black Queens in a key WAFCON 2024 warm-up match.
Six-time African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala celebrated her return to international football by scoring her first goal for Nigeria’s Super Falcons in over a year.
The striker was on target as the Super Falcons secured a 3-1 victory over their fierce rivals, Ghana’s Black Queens, in their final pre-tournament friendly ahead of WAFCON 2024.
Oshoala’s Impactful Return
Oshoala, 30, celebrated her comeback with a well-taken penalty in the 44th minute, doubling Nigeria’s lead just before halftime.
This goal was her first for the national team since the 2024 Olympics, where the Falcons failed to replicate their 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup magic.
Her strike helped solidify Nigeria’s dominance in the match and boosted the team’s confidence heading into the tournament.
Super Falcons Dominate Jollof Derby
The eagerly anticipated Jollof derby, held on Sunday, June 29, 2025, in Lanouria, Morocco, showed the intense rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana.
The Super Falcons delivered a commanding performance, taking control early and maintaining pressure throughout the game.
After Oshoala’s penalty, which was preceded by Chinwe Ihezuo’s lovely opener, captain Rasheedat Ajibade added a third goal in the 50th minute to seal the convincing win.
Coach Justine Madugu introduced fresh legs in the second half with substitutions including Ifeoma Onumonu, Sikiratu Isah, and Esther Okoronkwo, maintaining the team’s momentum.
The victory not only gave Nigeria bragging rights but also demonstrated their readiness and depth as they prepare for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Falcons’ strong showing in this final warm-up match sends a clear message to their WAFCON rivals: Nigeria is determined to reclaim continental glory.
