Agent explains collapsed transfer to Manchester United with 'disrespectful' claim

Adrien Rabiot's mother has accused Manchester United of being "disrespectful" during transfer talks. Rabiot has been linked with a move to Old Trafford on several occasions, but United's interest was genuine in 2022 when they grew frustrated during a dragged-out pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Attention turned to Rabiot and a £15million fee rising to £20m was agreed with Juventus. However, the move collapsed and sources indicated it was due to the Frenchman's ‘obscene’ salary demands. Rabiot is represented by his mother, Veronique, who has a reputation for an uncompromising approach to negotiations over her son's future and weekly earnings. In an interview with L’Equipe , Veronique Rabiot has now opened up on the collapsed move. “But that, too, is completely false. That year, Adrien was ready to leave Juve, who had qualified for the Champions League , for Manchester United , who hadn’t,” she said. “We discussed the terms and in the end, they said to me, 'If we don’t qualify for the Champions League at the end of next season, Adrien’s salary will go down.' I found that really over the top and very disrespectful. “I said, 'We’re stopping.' They thought it was a strategy to get more [money]. But no, it was a matter of principle, not money. Obviously, it surprised them. They’re not used to it.” United include a wage reduction clause in every player's contract to cover the failure to qualify for the Champions League, but Rabiot's mother did not agree to the terms and rejected the proposal. "Once it was clear I would not go to United, I focused straight back on Juventus to give everything I had," Rabiot told ESPN in November 2022. "I didn't want people to doubt my commitment or to think that because I could have left for United, I would not care anymore." United subsequently signed Casemiro for a fee rising to £70m. --- Here at the Manchester Evening News, we’re dedicated to bringing you the best Manchester United coverage and analysis.
