Air India has announced key updates on its US $400 million fleet retrofit programme, reinforcing its commitment to delivering a world-class flying experience and enhancing the reliability of its legacy fleet. Widebody Retrofit Underway The airline has launched its widebody retrofit for the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner fleet. The first aircraft (VT-ANT) was sent to Boeing’s facility in Victorville, California, in July 2025, the airline said. A second aircraft will follow in October, with both expected to re-enter service by December 2025. The programme will upgrade all 26 B787-8 aircraft by mid-2027 with new interiors featuring a three-class configuration: Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy. Enhancements include new seats, modern inflight entertainment systems, refurbished lavatories and galleys, and updated soft furnishings aligned with Air India’s new service standards. Additionally, the airline will begin retrofitting 13 legacy Boeing 777-300ERs starting in early 2027, with completion expected by October 2028. The timeline has been adjusted due to global supply chain delays. Reliability Enhancement for B787-8 Fleet Alongside the interior upgrades, Air India is implementing a Reliability Enhancement Programme for the B787-8 fleet. This includes avionics and systems upgrades to meet the latest industry standards. Modifications will be based on detailed analysis and Boeing’s service bulletins to reduce operational disruptions. Seven of the 26 Dreamliners will also undergo heavy maintenance (D-checks) at Victorville. Narrowbody Retrofit on Track Meanwhile, the retrofit programme of 27 legacy Airbus A320neo aircraft, that began in September 2024, is on track. With 15 aircraft already upgraded—most recently on August 9—and the 16th set to return by August 11, completion is targeted for September 2025. The addition of a third retrofit line at GMR’s MRO facility in Hyderabad has accelerated progress. The refurbished A320neos, featuring all-new cabins, are being deployed across key domestic and short-haul international routes, significantly enhancing the onboard experience for passengers.
