Airdrie gymnast has Commonwealth Games hopes after British title win

Airdrie teenager Mitchell Cargill hopes to forge a career in gymnastics and has set his sights on a Commonwealth Games medal. The 15-year-old has enjoyed an impressive season, and last month was crowned Under-16 all-rounder champion at the Scottish Gymnastics Championships at Ravenscraig. That earned him a place at the 2025 Artistic British Championships in Liverpool, where he was crowned under-16 vault champion, won silver in floor and was fifth all-round in his age group. The gold was the only one won this year by Scottish Gymnastics, from 13 medals. That earned Mitchell a spot in the Junior Men’s Masters final, where the Airdrie Academy pupil was fourth on vault and floor. Mitchell is also on the National Performance Programme, and trains at the prestigious City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club, under two-time Olympian Marius Gherman. Proud dad Billy said: “It’s magic and good form. He’s been doing this for years, and as he’s getting a little bit older, he’s getting better, so some of the medals he’s winning are becoming a bit more significant in his development. “That’s the last major one of the year and he’s doing his Nat5s between now and June, so that will be him with the head down. “After that he has the Caledonian Cup, which is four nations, in November, and then he’s back in the Scottish Championships, more European stuff, and the British is the biggest one at the moment. “Mitchell has been absolutely outstanding. “I’m pleased with the way he’s going, where he is, and where he’s forecast to go by his coaching staff and Scottish Gymnastics. “They’ve invested quite a bit into him, with the National Performance Programme and things like that. “He’s probably one of the top-ranked kids in the UK, and he’ll be coming up to U18 next year, when he only turned 15 in August, so he’s punching above his weight. “Between now and some of the bigger tournaments, and the Commonwealth Games – which he’s on track for – and potentially having a shout at the Worlds, Europeans or the Olympics, that’s his aspiration, that’s what he wants to do.” Having been in gymnastics from a young age, Billy reckons Mitchell may look at a scholarship programme or studying abroad, while continuing to train. He said: “We started Mitchell off at a fairly young age, he was in there from about seven, and he progressed through. He was at Cumbernauld, they transferred him to Glasgow for a trial, and has been there ever since. “I’d say he has been competitive since he was about 10, and has a natural aptitude for it. “College-wise, I think maybe the States is an option, there’s a really good chance of him broadening his horizons and studying overseas, especially out in America.”
