Ajay Jadeja Slams Shubman Gill For His 'Lucky Day' Remark On Vaibhav Suryavanshi's 35-Ball Century

14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi opened the innings for Rajasthan Royals on Monday, April 28, and scored 101 runs from 38 balls against Gujarat Titans at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The left-handed batter from Bihar hammered seven fours and 11 sixes during his stay at the crease and, in the process, also became the youngest batter (14 years, 32 days) to score a century in men’s T20 cricket and the fastest Indian to score a century (35 balls) in the IPL. Suryavanshi’s maiden IPL century helped RR chase down the target of 210 runs in 15.5 overs for the loss of two wickets and keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the IPL 2025 playoffs. After Suryavanshi’s record-breaking show with the bat helped RR secure a famous win in front of home fans, GT skipper Shubman Gill downplayed his performance by calling it a “lucky day” for Vaibhav. Speaking to the host broadcaster after the match, Gill said, “It was his (lucky) day. His hitting was just tremendous, and he made full use of his day.” Gill’s post-match reaction, however, didn’t go down well with former India batter and now commentator Ajay Jadeja, who slammed the 25-year-old for his comments. He criticised Gill’s statement while speaking on Jio Hotstar and indirectly referred the GT captain as “some player on television”. “But a 14-year-old to believe in himself, the amount that he believes in himself, and to take it that far, even if it’s, you know, one day like some player on television just said, oh, it was just his lucky day,” said Jadeja. “All of us who dreamt of playing cricket at 14–15 imagined innings like these… But this young man went out there and made that dream real. His power, his timing, his composure – that’s what amazed me. The strategic timeout after seven overs, the freedom he played with – it’s the environment they’ve created around him,” he added.
