Shubman Gill-led India put on their best performance and returned home with a 2-2 draw in the five-match Test series. India were without the services of their senior players R Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Plus, it was already announced that Jasprit Bumrah would only play three Tests in the series. An inexperienced side led by a young captain performed to the best of its abilities and did the unthinkable on English soil. Akash Deep played a key role in India's success and did the job in both departments. The right-arm pacer played three games in the series. Akash, who made it to the playing XI in the 2nd Test, took a 10-fer in Birmingham as India levelled the series 1-1. The 28-year-old struggled at Lord's. Akash returned to form in the fifth Test at the Oval and contributed in both departments. He scored a crucial 66v off 94 balls while coming out to bat at number 4 in India's second innings. Courtesy of his knock, India scored 396 in their second innings to set a target of 374. Akash scalped the crucial wicket of Harry Brook, who slammed a century. He heaped praise on the combination of captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir. "I like it (Gill-GG team) very much. The way GG (Gautam Gambhir) sir talked to me, the way he motivated me..he told me some things which even I didn't know as an individual. He told me that even you don't know the skills and capabilities that you have. When a player or coach with this much experience talk like this, your confidence level goes up. I think that confidence plays a big role at this level. His words gave me confidence, which reflected in matches," Akash told Times Now. He isn't part of India's white-ball teams and will make his return to international cricker in the home Test series against West Indies in October.
