Listen here. By OLIVER SALT Published: 18:05 BST, 2 April 2025 | Updated: 18:17 BST, 2 April 2025 Alexi Lalas has leapt to Donald Trump's defense over the 'administrative error' that accidentally deported a US citizen to a notorious El Salvador jail last month. Trump's administration has admitted mistakenly sending a Maryland man with protected legal status to prison in the Central American country, but is arguing against returning him due to his alleged gang ties and their lack of power over El Salvador. Lawyers for Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, 29, maintain he is not affiliated with any street gang while accusing the US government 'has never produced an iota of evidence' that he does. Amid the controversy surrounding Garcia and his accidental deportation to El Salvador, Lalas has defended the president over the mix-up and instead shifted the blame towards his predecessor Joe Biden. The retired USMNT star and Fox Sports analyst was initially criticized over his support for Trump by a user on X who wrote: 'There's many of us here to monitor the bulls*** you are promoting.' They then added: 'Give us a cogent argument for deporting an innocent legal resident to a foreign mega-prison in violation of a standing court order.... We're waiting'. He replied: 'Well, when you intentionally and irresponsibly open our borders allowing millions to enter illegally, somebody has to clean up the mess and restore order, security, and sense. 'Given the massive numbers, there may be mistakes. It’s a big mess and you’re gonna get a little dirty.' Lalas, who was a star for the USA at the 1994 World Cup, has hit out at the Democratic party and expressed his support for Trump on several occasions in the past. In July of last year the former soccer player attended the Republican convention in Milwaukee, a month before he took aim at Biden over his farewell speech after he dropped out of the election race. Lalas mocked the then-president's keynote address, writing on social media: 'Biden shouting into the night was cold, sad, and irrelevant.' He added: 'It was: cold - he was relegated into late night obscurity. Sad - being booted out of the election and left screaming into the midnight abyss was not how he (or [wife] Jill) envisioned the story to end. 'Irrelevant - Nothing he said changed a single vote…even if anyone stuck around.'
