Alexis Ohanian: ATHLOS boss takes giant step ahead of Michael Johnson with major investment in women's football

From Track and Field to Football, ATHLOS boss Alexis Ohanian extended his serial investment in women's sports, becoming a shareholder and board member in Chelsea Women's F.C.
ATHLOS boss Alexis Ohanian has taken another giant step ahead of sprint legend Michael Johnson by extending his investment from track and field to football, now becoming a minority investor in Chelsea Women's Football Club.
The 42-year-old business mogul acquired an 8-10% share of Chelsea Women's board, valued at approximately £20 million. Making the landmark announcement on X page, Ohanian wrote:
"I’ve bet big on women’s sports before—and I’m doing it again. I'm proud to announce that I'm joining @ChelseaFCW as an investor and board member. I'm honored for the chance to help this iconic club become America's favorite @BarclaysWSL team and much, much more."
Ohanian, husband of Tennis icon Serena Williams, is a serial investor in women's sports. In April 2024, the billionaire venture capitalist took an interest in athletics and announced his partnership with Gabby Thomas in sponsoring a women-only track meet after the Paris Olympic Games.
The Reddit co-founder announced he was investing in track and field by launching a record-breaking women-only track meet called ATHLOS. He became the first to announce the highest paycheck in a single athletics meet by paying its winners $60,000.
Following a successful inaugural ATHLOS meet that took place on September 26 at the Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island in New York City, the meet broke viewership record for women's sports across all social media platforms, garnering 3 million views, which smashed the record-breaking viewership of Caitlyn Clark's WNBA debut for the Indiana Fever, watched by 2.1 million viewers.
Ohanian's investment with the launch of ATHLOS and Michael Johnson's new Grand Slam Track (GST) league that debuted in Kingston in April this year, witnessed each Slam winner claim the prize of $100,000. The meets became the highest-paying track competitions in history, and fans have been termed them 'good for the sport's growth'.
Expectedly, top female track stars have referenced Ohanian for changing the game, with a recent citation from Paris Olympics triple gold medallist Thomas tweeting:
"No because @alexisohanian and @athlos really changed the game. you love to see it," following World Athletics' big money reveal for the Ultimate Championship set to debut in September 2026.
With Ohanian now delving into football as his new investment, it shows his relentless love for seeing the growth of women's sports.
Chelsea Women currently hold the distinction of being the world's most expensive women's football team. His investment of roughly £20m puts the value of Chelsea Women at more than £200m, which was the worth placed on the club when Chelsea FC Holdings sold the team to a sister company earlier this year. The Blues have put a post-investment valuation on the club at £245m.
Ohanian also owns shares in the TGL Golf League and has an estimated net worth of $150 million.
Earlier this month, Chelsea won their sixth consecutive WSL title. They became the first side to finish a 22-game campaign unbeaten and set a new league record of 60 points.
They also won the Women's League Cup in March and are going for a domestic treble when they meet Manchester United in the Women's FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday - a game Ohanian and Williams are expected to attend.
