On Monday, August 18, firefighters from Alicante were deployed to Castilla y Leon to reinforce efforts against a wave of wildfires sweeping through the region. The deployment is part of the coordinated operation organised by the Generalitat Valenciana, which aims to support local teams working under extreme conditions.
The Alicante operation brings together both provincial and municipal teams. From the Provincial Fire Consortium, 21 firefighters and five vehicles have been mobilised. The Alicante City Fire Service (SPEIS) has contributed a further 10 firefighters and four vehicles.
Their mission forms part of a larger contribution from the Valencian Community, which is providing 134 personnel, 13 fire engines, five water tankers, and a drone unit. The community is also providing specialist teams for logistics, mechanics, and communications. This operation brings together provincial consortia, the Generalitat’s forest brigades, and municipal fire services from Alicante, Castellon, and Valencia.
Across Castilla y Leon, 26 wildfires remain active, with Leon among the most affected provinces. The blazes have led to temporary evacuations in some areas, including villages in the Valdeon Valley, part of the Picos de Europa National Park. Fires have also reached Cantabria and Asturias, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation closely.
The coordinated response is an important regional collaboration, with teams from different parts of Spain combining efforts to protect communities and natural spaces.
