All Blue Badge holders could take their permits abroad under a shake-up, according to the Labour Party government. The Department for Transport updated its advice, at the height of summer holiday season this week. The update from Labour confirms that UK drivers with disability parking permits can be accepted in more than 25 countries throughout Europe. Around 2.8 million Blue Badge holders could benefit if they head abroad. Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Sweden all accept the badges. Switzerland also recognises the permits, but tourists must display a parking clock when parking. UK Blue Badge recognition across Spain is decided by local administrations, it added. People with disabilities can obtain, extend or be holders of extraordinary driving licenses contingent upon the adaptations, restrictions or other limitations in people, vehicles or traffic conditions that in each case might be necessary. Drivers from other countries, driving on Spanish roads, must comply with the provisions laid out in their driving licenses, Spain adds. It says: "Wheelchair users, People with walking difficulty, People with vision impairment, People with mental health issues, learning disabilities "The parking card is granted to people for which an impossibility to perform by themselves a number of basic vital tasks has been certified. Please note that parking cards might be granted to people with no driver license." Parking concessions vary in each country, the DfT says, with information available via parking card for people with disabilities in the European Union , and the FIA guide for the disabled traveller: using parking permits, cards and placards in the EU and EEA.
