All-CIF teams include San Diego’s best in basketball, soccer, water polo, wrestling

Winter All-CIF San Diego Section teams Boys basketball Player of the Year: JJ Sanchez, Montgomery The best player on the best team in San Diego, Sanchez averaged 18.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 3.2 steals a game. Montgomery wrapped up a spectacular four-year run with a San Diego Section Open Division championship. The Aztecs’ big four of brothers JJ Sanchez and Alek Sanchez as well as Xair Mendez and Devin Hamilton finished their high school careers with a 107-21 record. JJ Sanchez finished his career with 2,318 points, 13th-most all-time in the San Diego Section. Girls basketball Player of the Year: Bay Cordova, Mission Hills Cordova led a rebuilt Mission Hills team to a 23-9 record and a San Diego Section Open Division Championship. She finished the season averaging 15.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.7 steals per game. She saved her best for the playoffs, scoring 22 points vs. Cathedral Catholic, 11 vs. La Jolla Country Day and 12 against Francis Parker in the title game. He then gave the Saints the lead in PKs as St. Augustine went on to claim the title. The Saints finished the season 19-5-1, and Postlethwaite was named Western League Player of the Year. She had three multi-goal games, including four vs. Canyon Crest Academy and two vs. Poway, Cathedral Catholic and Santiago. The Knights finished the season 19-5-3, losing to Santa Margarita in the Southern California Regionals. San Marcos was ranked No. 13 in the state. The Knights finished the season 18-10, but didn’t lose a match to a San Diego Section team all season and finished the season ranked No. 9 in the state. A four-time state medalist, he went 7-0 in the state championships, winning the title match with a pin at 3:26. He finished the season 41-0 and had four pins in the San Diego Section Masters Meet. He was 81-0 over his final two seasons. Girls wrestling Wrestler of the Year: Lauren Zaragoza, Brawley A state champion at 135 pounds, Zaragoza cruised to the title in Bakersfield with a pair of pins and three decisions. She was also the San Diego Section Masters champion, winning with a pin in 3:57 in the finals. She finished the season with a 33-7 record with 24 pins.
