Alvarez penalty controversy: Is a law change on the horizon?
@Source: pulsesports.ng
The controversial penalty decision against Julian Alvarez in the Champions League could lead to a change in the laws of the game. The decision to disallow Julian Alvarez's penalty against Real Madrid could lead to a review of the laws of the game. What happened? PAY ATTENTION: Stay updated with the Latest Soccer News in Nigeria from Pulse Sports UEFA has released a video of the penalty, which shows the ball moving slightly after being touched by Alvarez's standing foot. The incident has sparked debate about the interpretation of the law, with Atletico Madrid contacting the continent's governing body to discuss the decision. UEFA has now confirmed that it will discuss the law with FIFA and IFAB, the bodies responsible for setting the rules of football. “Atletico de Madrid enquired with UEFA over the incident, which led to the disallowance of the kick from the penalty mark taken by Julian Alvarez at the end of yesterday’s UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid,” read the statement. “Although minimal, the player made contact with the ball using his standing foot before kicking it, as shown in the attached video clip. Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the VAR had to call the referee signalling that the goal should be disallowed. “UEFA will enter discussions with FIFA and IFAB to determine whether the rule should be reviewed in cases where a double touch is clearly unintentional.” The current law states that a penalty kick is invalid if the kicker touches the ball twice before it touches another player. However, there is debate about whether this law should apply in cases where the double touch is unintentional. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone was angered by the decision, claiming that there was insufficient evidence for VAR to overturn the referee's initial call. He questioned whether anyone in the stadium had seen Alvarez touch the ball twice. What next in the Champions League? Following their success over their Madrid rivals, Carlo Ancelotti’s men face Arsenal in the quarter-final, with the victor taking on Paris Saint-Germain or Aston Villa in the semis.
