Former world number one Andy Murray revealed what he had said
while meeting Argentina’s legendary forward Lionel Messi. The former Barcelona
striker was in the stands during the semifinal of the men’s singles category.
His presence got the attention of everyone in the arena, including
the likes of Novak Djokovic, Jakub Mensik and Murray. The 37-year-old, who is
often regarded as the greatest British player in men’s tennis in the singles
category, post a picture with Messi in a post on his official account on the social
media platform Instagram where he revealed what he said while meeting the World
Cup-winning striker. “I asked him if he could do it on a cold rainy night in
Stoke. He responded “cállate la boca” which i think means yes in Spanish,” he
The reference to ‘cold rainy night in Stoke’ is that in the
past, a lot of players who came from foreign leagues struggled to play in
English football, especially during the winters when the pitches get slippery
as well because of ice. Djokovic was also full of praise for Messi and stated
that it was ‘an honour’ to play in the area where a player of Messi’s quality
was sitting in the stands. “It’s a great honour to have King Leo in the stands,”
he said after beating Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets in the semifinal with a
score of 6-2, 6-3. “I think it’s the first time I’ve played in front of Messi,
and honestly, I was a little nervous. “I am very grateful for his attendance
with his family. I have always been a fan of him, as most of the world has,
throughout his career.”
Messi lives in the United States and plays for Major League Soccer club Inter Miami. Murray, who retired from professional tennis last year after participating in the Paris Olympics, is currently working with former world number one Djokovic as his coach.
