Anti-Trump 'May Day' Protesters Issue Urgent Alert on Executive Orders
@Source: newsweek.com
Groups planning nationwide protests against President Donald Trump and his administration's policies on Thursday have issued an "urgent" alert over executive orders he signed on Monday.The orders "escalate the Trump regime's attacks on our democratic values by targeting sanctuary cities in an effort to undermine local governments and embolden law enforcement to cooperate with ICE to disappear our immigrant neighbors with impunity," immigrant rights and civil rights organizations say in a pop-up on a website urging people to sign a solidarity pledge against Trump's mass deportation agenda.More than 9,000 people have already signed the pledge, according to the website.Newsweek has contacted the organizers for further comment via a website contact form.Why It MattersProtests against the Trump administration have grown in momentum in recent weeks, demonstrators repeatedly taking to the streets to express their anger at the way Trump is running the country. They have demonstrated against the administration's effort to deport immigrants, fire thousands of federal workers, cut funding for health programs and more. Recent polls have shown Trump's approval rating at a historic low.A "national day of action" is planned for May Day—Thursday, May 1—and the weekend, with events slated to be held across the nation.What To Know Trump signed two executive orders related to immigration on Monday.One order expands law enforcement operations to make it easier to detain migrants. According to the White House, it is focused on "strengthening and unleashing America's law enforcement to pursue criminals and protect innocent citizens."The other order directs the attorney general and Homeland Security Security to publish a list of "sanctuary city" jurisdictions—places where local authorities often don't cooperate in enforcing federal immigration regulations. It also calls for the heads of agencies to identify federal funds to sanctuary jurisdictions that can be suspended or terminated.On the website for the solidarity pledge, organizers said it "is not just an attack on immigrants — it is an attack on all of us who believe in human rights, local democracy, and the rule of law. It is part of a broader strategy to consolidate power, silence dissent, and dismantle the foundations of a free society."They added: "Already, we have seen the deportation of US-born citizens, the arrest of a judge for upholding due process, the kidnapping of international students, and the imprisonment of long-time US residents in El Salvador."The message called on people to join protests on May 23 "to resist this assault on our democracy."What People Are Saying The organizers also wrote: "The regime's actions are designed to spread fear, break apart communities, and discourage public dissent. However, we have a clear message for the Trump regime: We refuse to be silent as our communities are criminalized and our freedoms are eroded."Organizers of the May Day "national day of action" say on their website: "Trump and his billionaire profiteers are trying to create a race to the bottom—on wages, on benefits, on dignity itself. This May Day we are fighting back. We are demanding a country that puts our families over their fortunes—public schools over private profits, healthcare over hedge funds, prosperity over free market politics."The White House said in a fact sheet that the order on sanctuary jurisdictions "ensures illegal aliens are not being favored over American citizens by directing the Attorney General to address state or local laws that unlawfully prioritize aliens."What's Next More than 1,000 rallies, marches and other events are planned for cities across the U.S. on Thursday.
