Visakhapatnam: Home minister Vangalapudi Anitha on Thursday inaugurated a CCTV control room at the Nakkapalli circle office, set up using special funds to bolster surveillance and public safety along the National Highway corridor.The facility is equipped with 100 CCTV cameras, covering a 32-km stretch from Payakaraopeta Tandava Junction to S. Rayavaram and Dharmavaram. The system is aimed at improving traffic regulation, crime prevention, and emergency response along the busy route. On the occasion, the minister also flagged off 10 electric two-wheelers, donated by Finvesco Capital India Ltd., for use by Mahila Shakti Teams. These vehicles will help the teams respond swiftly to women-related issues such as eve-teasing, ragging, and other distress situations via the Dial 112 helpline. Addressing the gathering, Anitha said the state government is committed to technology-driven policing and reiterated plans to install one lakh CCTV cameras across Andhra Pradesh. She highlighted that such surveillance systems will greatly aid police in maintaining law and order. The minister criticised the previous government’s management of the police department and noted that crime rates have declined under the current government and commended the police for their successful efforts. Anitha specifically applauded the police department's initiatives to combat drug-related offences, with a focus on marijuana trafficking. The minister further cautioned students and young adults about the responsible use of social media and the risks associated with drug addiction. She encouraged the youth to be mindful and avoid choices that could adversely affect their lives. District SP Tuhin Sinha said the new system would greatly enhance the department’s capacity to monitor traffic, prevent accidents, and ensure public safety. He thanked the home minister for her continuous support in modernising police operations.
