Apologised To Doctor, But Can't Tolerate Indiscipline: Goa Minister Vishwajit Rane On Viral Video

A video of Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane recently went viral, in which he is seen pulling up the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Goa Medical College. In the footage, an angry Rane can be heard telling the CMO that he has been suspended and should go home for failing to perform his duties. Following the incident, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant clarified that he had spoken with Health Minister Rane and assured that CMO Dr Rudresh Kuttikar would not be suspended.
Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Health Minister Rane said, “I tendered my apology to the concerned doctor for my behaviour, but I cannot tolerate indiscipline in healthcare services.” Rane, while speaking to this reporter, added, “I am the longest-serving Health Minister of the state. I often receive calls directly from citizens of Goa at any time of the day regarding medical emergencies. I have always strived to provide the best healthcare facilities through Goa Medical College. But if someone neglects their duty, I will not hesitate to pull them up.”
A senior minister in the Sawant cabinet, Rane also hit out at opposition parties for politicising the matter. The revocation of CMO Kuttikar’s suspension was viewed by some as a sign of tension between the top two ministers in the state government. However, Rane clarified, “There are no differences between me and CM Sawant. In the first place, I had not issued any formal written suspension order. I was angry because of the indiscipline. I will never allow politics to interfere with GMC, which is our premier healthcare institution serving the people of Goa.”
The surprise visit by Rane has received mixed reactions. While some sections of local citizens appreciated his intervention—citing poor treatment at GMC—others, including political parties and local resident doctors, criticised his conduct. Resident doctors even held protests against what they called inappropriate behaviour by the minister. “My actions may invite criticism or praise, but I don’t work for either,” Rane said.
“I am focused only on fulfilling the vision given to us by Prime Minister Modi to serve the people. If anyone compromises that goal, I will continue to hold them accountable.” Rane, the longest-serving Health Minister in Goa, reiterated his ambition to make GMC a premier medical institution in India. “I don’t wait for government approvals if doctors want to attend international conferences or present papers abroad. I’ve even supported them personally. As the Health Minister, I always encourage such initiatives. But just like a parent scolds their child when they misbehave, I did the same—and I will continue to do so,” Rane asserted.
