Apple eyes formula 1 US broadcasting rights amid rising popularity
@Source: dailytimes.com.pk
Apple is reportedly in talks to secure the US broadcasting rights for Formula 1, aiming to begin coverage from 2026, according to the Financial Times. This move follows the massive success of F1: The Movie, which earned $293 million at the global box office, becoming Apple’s biggest theatrical hit to date.
Currently, ESPN—owned by Disney—holds the Formula 1 rights in the United States. However, Apple appears ready to challenge the network as ESPN’s exclusive negotiation window ends soon. Insiders familiar with the matter say Apple is preparing a serious bid to enter the competitive sports streaming space.
The surge in Formula 1’s US popularity can largely be credited to Netflix’s Drive to Survive series. The show brought millions of new fans to the sport, especially in North America, creating a golden opportunity for broadcasters to tap into a growing and passionate viewer base.
Apple’s interest is also part of its broader strategy to expand in sports entertainment. Following deals in Major League Soccer and Friday Night Baseball, acquiring F1 rights would further solidify Apple’s position in global sports broadcasting.
Meanwhile, Netflix is also reportedly interested in grabbing the US F1 rights once ESPN’s deal expires. The competition between Apple and Netflix could drive the price up and reshape how Americans watch Formula 1 in the future.
Neither Apple nor Formula 1 has officially commented on the ongoing negotiations. However, the battle for streaming rights is heating up, and fans could see major changes in how they access the world’s premier motorsport.
