Donald Trump is reportedly set to reveal a trade agreement with the UK later today (May 8). The US president hinted at a "major trade deal" with a "big, highly respected country" on his Truth Social account, and a press briefing is anticipated around 3pm UK time. According to sources, including the New York Times, the deal is with the UK. The UK Government has been seeking an arrangement with the US to mitigate the effects of comprehensive tariffs introduced by Mr Trump last month, which imposed a 10 per cent tax on all UK exports and a 25 per cent duty on steel, aluminium, and automobiles. Should Mr Trump confirm a deal with the UK, it would be the first since he implemented the tariffs on April 2. In a speech at the London Defence Conference on Thursday, the Prime Minister said: "As you know, talks with the US have been ongoing and you’ll hear more from me about that later today. "But make no mistake, I will always act in our national interest, for workers, businesses and families, to deliver security and renewal for our country." Speculation suggests that the potential deal might involve the UK lowering certain tariffs on American goods and altering the digital services tax that predominantly impacts US tech firms. However, the UK Government has dismissed any suggestions of reducing food standards to accommodate more US farm products or diluting the Online Safety Act, which some in the US view as an infringement on free speech rights. If announced on Thursday, this trade deal would follow closely after the UK's declaration of a trade agreement with India, which Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described as a "landmark deal".
