Ariana Grande has posted a moving tribute to Manchester on the eighth anniversary of the Manchester Arena bombing. The singer had just finished a performance at the venue on May 22 2017 when suicide bomber Salman Abedi detonated a homemade explosive device, killing 22 people who had been attending the concert and injuring hundreds of others. Eight years on, Grande has posted a subtle but moving tribute to her Instagram stories. These were a heart, Manchester's symbol of a bee, and an infinity symbol, perhaps in an indication that the singer will always have Manchester in her heart. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham also paid tribute, writing in a post on X: "We know every day is difficult for all those whose lives changed forever eight years ago - but this one particularly so. "Today we remember, send our love to you all and recommit our unending support." In a tweet sent in the aftermath of the attack in 2017 Grande, who was not physically hurt, said how she had been left "broken" by the atrocity. She wrote: "Broken. from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don't have words." Grande has often posted on the anniversary of the tragedy, including in 2020 when she wrote: "Not a day goes by that this doesn't affect you and all of us still. "I will be thinking of you all week and weekend." On June 4 2017, less than two weeks after the attack, Grande performed the benefit concert One Love Manchester at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. The singer returned to Manchester in 2019 to perform at the city's pride festival, telling the crowd: "I'm so happy to be with you, so thank you for having me. Sorry, I'm so nervous. I had so much more to say but I'm really very overwhelmed. So thank you." In her first time returning to the city since the bombing, Grande began her set with No Tears Left to Cry, the first song she released after the bombing. In 2017, Manchester City Council unanimously agreed to make Grande an honorary citizen of Manchester as a gesture of thanks for her response to the attack.
