Arne Slot gives Liverpool squad Mo Salah warning about standards in Premier League race
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Arne Slot believes every Liverpool player must reach Mo Salah’s standards. And the Reds boss warned his charges that even a 1 per cent drop off in performance will earn them a rollicking. Slot is keen to ensure there’s no complacency among his squad as they head into tonight’s clash with Newcastle 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League table. The Reds have one hand on the trophy with 11 games to go and tonight’s game against the Magpies is the first of seven home games in their title race run-in. If any Liverpool player considers slacking they would only need to look at Salah as the Egyptian continues to topple goal-scoring records and fire his side to the title. Slot said: “If you want to play at this club you need to be at his level otherwise you are almost useless to play at this club because we only need players that are at the top of their game. Because this is one of the best, or the best, club in the world to play for.” Salah has 51 goal involvements so far this season with 30 goals in all competitions and 21 assists. He is the first Premier League player to score 25 goals or more and register 15 assists or more in the same season. But he also brought praise for his defence showing in Sunday’s 2-0 win at Manchester City as he continued to track back tirelessly throughout the huge win. Now the Reds are on the home straight with Arsenal floundering, it would be easy for some to let standards slip and eyes maybe move to the Champions League and an upcoming clash with PSG. Slot won’t allow that and he doesn’t believe that there is that attitude amongst his squad as they go for three trophies this season. He said: “It is not about the result, it is about the effort you put in. You can’t control the outcome but you can control what you put in. We couldn’t control the 97th minute event at Everton. But you just work as hard as you can. Like we did against City. "That’s all we are asking for. If someone doesn’t put the effort in any more I would definitely say something about it. But these players are trained by Jurgen and by me for this long, that they know it is all about effort. “Probably - I don’t know - they talk to one another as well if someone does 1 per cent less. “That’s not what we expect because they did seven or eight months the same and they know how hard it was to beat the three teams I just said at home and we couldn’t beat Everton, we couldn’t beat Villa, we couldn’t beat Newcastle. “The players probably know even more than the people around us how much it takes for us to win our games. That’s why I’ve full confidence that we keep working as hard as we do. But it can lead to a draw. Like we have experienced in all these games that I’ve just said.” Slot has said Conor Bradley will be out for a “number of weeks” with a hamstring injury.
