33,000 gangs? I think they're using some pretty loose criteria. Maybe they counted all the churches.

Utter fear mongering bullshiat. Most of these outfits, if they even actually exist, will be barely organized, and not exactly engaging in widespread, effective campaigns drug distribution, extortion, terrorism, and murder.

The police weren't named specifically, though they were certainly inferred by the inclusion of the Proud Boys, KKK and Aryan Brotherhood.

Our understanding of "gangs" is one of the most insidious and racist things that has happened in the last 50 years. The very concept we have of gangs is mostly a fiction, and overwhelmingly used by law enforcement officers to tack on longer and more severe punishments to minorities.
If you are black, poor, and have a friend group, and one member of that friend group commits a crime, congrats, you're now in a criminal gang. There are instances where people have formed rap groups, and later the name they picked for that rap group has been referred to as a criminal gang because one of the members got caught with some drugs.
The label is also HIGHLY racialized. Black kids with friend groups get RICO charges when one of them commits a crime. Adult white meth manufacturers and distributors working in groups of 20 or more people do not.
There are a million urban legends about gangs, and gang initiations and the like that are all complete fiction.
I'm not saying criminal organizations don't exist, but the vast majority of what we hear about gangs is just wrong. This article is just another piece of the pile of lies.
The podcast You're Wrong About does a much better job of explaining i and providing sources than I can. It's really worth a listen.

forget the unions, what about actual legit police gangs with tattoos and initiation rites and everything? LAPD has a huge problem with this and i'm positive that's not the only city.

OK, whoever put the funny on that. Admittedly, didn't read the article, but they've got a picture of some guy getting his MS 13 tat photographed. MS13 is vastly oversold. It was the last Turnip Administration's Tren De Aragua.

Also, I love how the photo associated with the Gangster Disciples entry is "A photo of Chicago" and it's just a nice, quiet, well kept suburban street.
This is why you don't just blindly cut and paste whatever AI spits out when you give it prompts.

csb - played a ton of soccer in the 80/90/some of the oughts none of your business how many against a number of different gang members from different countries not ALL central/south american thank you and only once suffered fentanyl exposure but we shared oranges and I'm a light weight, and always got good weed.
ok...some of that isn't true...the playing part and opponents being 'ganged' up if you will and using a DHS dictionary are...sure there were more fights...because they were a bit oppressed and scared but yeah. i didn't realize what many went through when I was younger...we farking traumatize some people boy I tell you. We suck ass. collectively...you're cool.

The Vagos. When I was catering in Los Angeles, I had friends in one of their "support clubs," I'm not saying which. They wanted me to boil crawfish but it was too expensive to fly crawfish out to Los Angeles, so I did a shrimp boil. They provided the octopi. "WE LOVE MARISCOS ESE! NO DISRESPECT" Soon as I poured the goods on the tables, it was all flick knives and missing fingers, those cholos and white boys went crazy.
They were always good to me but I wouldn't want to be on their bad side.
Years later in Louisiana I had a long term gf whose brother was with the Bandidos. He's a total dirtbag loser (we got acquainted - hey I porked his fine ass sister for years). She always said about MCs: it's a frat for guys who never graduated high school. Their mom's house was a block away from a 1% bar so they grew up with it. Wawee's used to be anyway. It's been a while.
I never was a joiner, so I politely and respectfully said so and declined whenever MCs tapped me. Probably saved me a ton of stupid trouble. I just like to ride and keep to myself.
Anyway on gangs and cholos, during the time I was in Los Angeles, the easiest way to tell if someone did time was if they had on Dallas cowboys ANYTHING. That told ya right away.

I remain under the impression that gangs are a problem where I live.
Of course, it's Canada, where there's not an overwhelming number of stupid ass domestic, road rage, and just accidental shootings in which the gang activity is buried.
We had a legit gangland murder every month the first year I got here. The RCMP with some regularity publishes lists of 10 Hells Angels or similar gang guys that they warn the public away from or you might get hit in a crossfire. And then they get killed coming out of a restaurant two months later. A car is then found burning nearby.
So I don't really see anything in his thread or that podcast or whatever that's convincing as to the "fakeness" of organized crime. Doesn't really seem to be a thing the cops are making up. In fact, it seems to be something they're really bad at.
I don't have any problem believing that in the US organized gang activity is a minuscule fraction of overall day-to-day gun violence. I kind of feel like here there's less of that, so the gang contribution is a much bigger component.
