Aston Villa have been credited with an interest in another goalkeeper in the event that Emiliano Martinez moves on in the summer. According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Villa have ‘identified’ Lucas Chevalier as the ‘ideal’ replacement for their long-time No. 1. He even claims Villa have made an ‘approach’. Speculation has been rife that the Argentine might leave at the end of the summer after what appeared to be an emotional reaction to the final home game of the season. Unai Emery didn’t exactly play that down when he was asked about Martinez’s tears after the win over Tottenham, since when the rumour mill has gone into overdrive. Martinez has been linked with the likes of Man Utd and Atletico Madrid, while there has been talk of a lucrative offer in Saudi Arabia. Concomitant with that have been links with other ‘keepers – not least Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, who is also thought to be of interest to Arsenal and United. Chevalier’s name is a new one in the mix, the 23-year-old has come through the system at Lille and has established himself as the French outfit’s first choice for the last three seasons. He has made 127 appearances so far in his career, 48 this season including ten in the Champions League. He has also played for France at age group level and in the last Olympics. He was named Ligue 1 goalkeeper of the year, ahead of Villa’s tormentor in chief Gigi Donnarumma, who played so well against them in the Champions League quarter-finals. Indeed PSG are credited with an interest in Chevalier and while the youngster has two years left on his contract with Lille, L’Equipe say he ‘wants to reach new heights’ Everyday, the BirminghamLive football desk strive to deliver all manner of news, features and transfer-related stories as a part of our overall package of Aston Villa content.
