Aston Villa new hero emerges as Sir Alex Ferguson watches Manchester United suffer heartbreak

Sam Proctor was the hero as Aston Villa booked their place in the final of the FA Youth Cup with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Manchester United. Jimmy Shan’s side had previously beaten Accrington Stanley, Newcastle United , Bristol City and Plymouth Argyle to get themselves in the final four of a competition the club has won on four previous occasions. Despite being cheered on by around 1,000 United supporters, which included Sir Alex Ferguson at Villa Park , the young Red Devils fell behind with just four minutes on the clock when Trai-Varn Mulley reacted quickest to a free-kick being blocked to finish from close-range. Villa were then handed a golden opportunity to retake the lead when Jimoh-Aloba was brought down by United goalkeeper Will Murdock inside the penalty area. But Villa captain Aidan Borland hit his spot kick high and wide, while at the other end Tyler Fletcher rattled the post for United just before the break. Chido Obi, who dropped down from Ruben Amorim’s squad to play in the game after featuring in the Premier League recently, then headed against the post with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. Extra-time couldn’t separate the two sides, so penalties were required to decide who will face either Watford or Manchester City in May. Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba, Keilan Quinn and Max Jenner all scored from the spot for Villa, and although Scanlon managed to score for Adam Lawrence's side, Proctor denied Jim Thwaites and Amir Ibragimov, while Zach Baumann dragged United’s final penalty wide of the post. Villa, who will host the 2025 final, now await the winners of the other semi-final tie between Watford and City, which is set to be played on Thursday, April 10.
