During the initial races of the 400-meter event, defending champions Charlestown Primary struggled, failing to secure a single gold medal. For a brief moment, it seemed as though the champions had seen their best days.
However, once they started winning gold medals, they gained momentum! The highly anticipated Gulf Insurance/BONI Interprimary Championship, commonly referred to as the MINI-OLYMPICS, took place at the Nevis Athletic Stadium on Wednesday, April 2nd. As usual, a large crowd attended to witness the event.
After an impressive march past and the official opening ceremony, the competitive portion of the meet began with the ball throw. Athletes mesmerized the enthusiastic spectators with outstanding performances across various distances: the 400, 800, 1200, 200, 150, and 100 meters, along with the 60 meters and the 4×100 and 4×400 meters relays.
With just two races remaining, Ivor Walters Primary School led with 16 gold medals, while Charlestown Primary had 15. The defending champions won the girls’ 4×400 meters race, which set up a thrilling final race. The outcome was clear: if Charlestown Primary won, they would be the overall winners. If Ivor Walters won, they would take the trophy. If another school won, Charlestown would retain the trophy due to their higher number of silver medals.
Everyone watched intently as the athletes raced around the track. To everyone’s surprise, St. Thomas’ Primary School excelled and dominated the race. Not only did Charlestown Primary win, but they also made history by becoming the first school to win six consecutive championships at this prestigious event!
