Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran is concerned about the recent attack on an elderly couple in Labasa. Ms Kiran said that it is troubling that older individuals are becoming victims of violent acts. “Those who hurt our elders will face full brunt of the law,” Ms Kiran said. It is completely unacceptable because older people deserve to be treated with respect and live in peace. One of the victims is in serious condition and admitted at the Labasa Hospital, while the other has been treated and is now recovering at home. The incident happened at Kawakawa Settlement in Waiqele on Monday. “This incident is a sad reminder of how vulnerable many of our senior citizens are and we must all do our part to protect them,” the minister said. Government action The Government continues to support older citizens through programmes like social protection and healthcare. The ministry will keep working closely with the police and other stakeholders to stop violence and abuse against the elderly. To the senior citizens the ministry is saying, please stay connected with your communities. If you feel unsafe or threatened, do not hesitate to reach out to local authorities or nearby support services. “Disrespect of our older persons shows we have failed as a society in instilling good values in our younger ones,” she said. Ms Kiran has called on all Fijians, especially our young people, to show respect, compassion and care for the elderly. Elderly citizens must be able to live with dignity and safety in their own homes. Police update Meanwhile, police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said investigation was still ongoing. “Labasa Police received a report that a man forcefully entered the home, assaulted the occupants and stole money,” Ms Naisoro said. It is alleged the robber hit the shopkeeper’s head, causing him to fall unconscious. He then allegedly assaulted the shopkeeper’s wife on the face demanded money from her and fled afterwards.
