The Australian women's rugby sevens team has been left stunned after losing to unheralded Brazil 14-12 in Vancouver.
The ecstatic Brazilians could hardly believe what they had achieved in the pool A match at the Vancouver world series leg, as they roared back from a 12-0 deficit at half-time to eke out a memorable triumph.
"It's really hard to find some words to describe what we are feeling because for us it's a really big challenge to compete against the top teams," Brazil's Raquel Kochhann said.
"In Brazil, rugby is not a popular sport so we fight a lot in our country to have some spots and show the world that Brazil is more than just football.
"So for us, this is a really, really big day to show the whole world and Brazilians that Brazil rugby is a great team and it's growing to fight some of the top teams."
The Australians, who are the reigning world series winners, were without star player Maddison Levi, who was sidelined following surgery on her thumb.
Brazil's shock win has not completely derailed Australia's campaign.
Australia, who is also World Cup champions, had earlier beaten Spain 42-0 and will play Canada on Sunday AEDT in its final group match as it aims for a quarterfinal place.
Meanwhile, Australia moved through to the quarterfinal stage of the men's competition after producing a 2-1 win-loss record in pool B.
Australia defeated Ireland 17-7 and lost by the same scoreline to New Zealand, before completing a 17-12 victory over South Africa in its final pool match.
